Creator's Diary 01: Prototypes of plastic bags crocheting
Inspiration: Molla Mills
Inspired by the crochet master Molla Mills' book Virkkuri, I started my material exploration of plarn (plastic yarn) using crocheting techniques (single and double crochet) from the book. I mainly want to find out how this material looks and feels like, and whether this material fits this traditional techniques.
Pattern designed by Molla is simple and timeless. She usually uses 1-3 colors in one project, the final product is minimalistic and with strong visual identity.
To find out whether my plastic yarn (which made out of waste plastic bags) is suitable for crocheting, especially with different combinations of colors and patterns.
1. Cut wasted plastic bags into yarn (please check my tutorial on Youtube: https://youtu.be/qozL9pcTAq0)
2. Find patterns from Molla's crochet book, decide which pattern to make
3. Decide color combination
Since this is just a material testing, I didn't spend too much effort on design part.
I am very surprised with the outcome, these prototypes turned out to be strong, beautiful and durable. This experiment shows the potential of plarn to be turned into household objects (basket, bag, coaster, slipper). The value of the raw material (plastic bags) has been increased, which means they were successfully "Upcycled".
